A day in the life of Mishap Mick

Mick is our case study character and his day of disasters will illustrate how having the right insurance cover is essential to your particular business. Fortunately, Mick does not exist. His experiences are a compilation of the typical claims we receive from people in the motor trades industry.

It's Monday morning and Mick is on his way to the workshop. He makes a quick stop for some breakfast and takes a couple of calls. While he’s in the café his van gets broken into and his palm pilot is stolen. Luckily, he's covered for general property loss under his policy.

Back on the road he gets a call from his apprentice. The windows at the workshop have been smashed. Fortunately, Mick's covered for the window glass breakage and for the sign writing he had done just last week.

When he gets to the workshop Mick discovers it's worse than he thought. He's also been burgled. Mick's down two tool kits, $1,000 in cash and a couple of cases of spare parts he'd taken delivery of on Friday. Mick's cover for burglary and money lost outside business hours on the premises will take care of all these items though so he breathes a little easier.

Whilst driving his good customer Fred home from the workshop, with his car on the back of Mick's tow truck, he’s thinking that the worst of the day must have past by now.

Fred explains to Mick that his car simply stopped when he was driving that morning because it had run out of oil. At that point Mick notices Fred's Sump Plug sitting on the dashboard of the car and realises that his mechanic accidentally forgot to put it back on. Lucky for Mick, his liability policy covers the cost of fixing faulty work undertaken by his employee, as it is covered within his limit of liability cover taken with Mick’s policy.

At lunchtime, Mick's accountant rings with some bad news. It looks like the tax office is auditing the business. Mick's insurance will cover the professional fees from the tax audit.

On the way home, Mick's van skids on a slippery road and collects the tail end of another vehicle. Thankfully, Mick knows the repairs will be covered under his motor vehicle insurance.

More worrying to him is his neck and shoulder, which seem to have been injured in the accident. He’s going to need time off. It's a relief to know his insurance covers him for personal accident and illness so he'll get weekly benefits to cover his income while he can't work. And with this income cover he will be able to hire someone to fill the gap at the workshop.

The above scenarios sketch the broad outlines of some of the cover options suitable to your particular business. For further details on the cover, additional benefits and exclusions for each cover option, as well as further cover options, please consult the Product Disclosure Statement or call us on 132 818.

As a mechanic or panel beater you may want to consider such cover options as:

  • Liability for personal injury and property damage
  • Liability for rectifying faulty workmanship
  • Fire, storm and other defined events (includes malicious damage)
  • Business interruption
  • Personal accident and illness cover
  • Machinery breakdown
  • Fraud or dishonesty
