Bob is our case study character and his day of disasters will illustrate how having the right insurance cover is essential to your particular business. Fortunately, Bob does not exist. His experiences are a compilation of the typical claims we receive from farmers.
Bob’s family has been on the land for three generations. He’s no stranger to the things that can go wrong on a farm, but this weekend was one for the record books.
It’s harvest time and Bob has spent the last few days overseeing things in the field. He figures they’re about half way through the job when the motor of the quad bike he’s riding catches fire. Luckily, Bob’s motor vehicle insurance will meet the cost of replacing the bike.
Later that morning, Bob heads up to the sheds to check on supplies. He finds the lock on one of the sheds has been smashed, the doors damaged, and several pallets of chemicals are missing. Repairs to the door and the lost supplies will be covered under Bob’s burglary and theft cover.
Bob heads back down to the house for some lunch, but the news isn’t much better there. While his wife Jill was out this morning, a water pipe burst flooding the laundry and bathroom. Fortunately, Bob’s domestic house and contents insurance will cover the repairs to his home.
Bob checks the weather forecast online – storms are heading his way. He’s about to check the local stock prices when the computer suddenly shuts down. It won’t start again, leaving Bob without all his farm records.
Luckily, Bob took out cover to protect the farm against loss of information and data, which means he’ll be covered for the cost of re-producing and updating all his records under his electronic equipment cover.
Bob is just sitting down to a cup of tea when his accountant calls with the news that the tax office is auditing Bob’s business. The accountant will have some extra work to do, but Bob’s covered for the professional fees he has to pay to respond to the tax audit.
All of these events prove a bit too much for Bob, whose health unfortunately takes a turn for the worse. His doctor orders him to take a break from work until his health improves. Thankfully, Bob can take the time he needs to recover without the stress of worrying about his income. His personal accident and illness cover will provide income for Bob until he is ready to return to work on the farm.
The above scenarios sketch the broad outlines of some of the cover options suitable to your particular business.
