We are helping storm-proof Queensland with our sponsorship of the State Emergency Service (SES).
The SES is a network of around 8000 highly skilled volunteers who provide invaluable assistance in every community in Queensland when emergencies occur.
From tarping roofs after a storm, to rescuing people stranded by floodwaters, searching for lost children, and saving bush walkers from a cliff in rugged terrain, SES volunteers are always there when needed.
SES Volunteer Discount
NRMA Insurance would like to recognise the contribution of SES volunteers by offering them a discount when they next renew their insurance.
If you're an SES volunteer find out how to get the "hero treatment".
How we're helping
NRMA Insurance and the Department of Emergency Services are working together to increase storm preparedness education to encourage the community to take steps against damage and loss in their own 'backyard'.
Storm Damage not only creates thousands of SES call-outs during summer, it also accounts for one in four of the home claims we handle. That's why we've joined forces with the Queensland SES to remind people of the simple steps they can take to protect themselves and their property.
NRMA Insurance have also provided grants of up to $1000 to 30 SES groups to help them purchase vital equipment for storm readiness and response, such as pole pruners and chainsaws.
Did you know?
- 75% of Queenslanders do not regularly clear gutters of leaves and debris, check the maintenance of their roof including tiles and aerials, or lop overhanging tree branches.
- More than one in four of the home claims we respond to are storm-related.
How you can help
Top five things you can do to protect your home this storm season:
- get your roof checked for any damage or corrosion, and also check for loose tiles or aerials;
- clear leaves and other debris from gutters, downpipes and drains so water can get away from your home as quickly as possible;
- get shade sails and awnings professionally fitted to prevent them tearing off and remember to secure loose items around the yard, such as toys, outdoor furniture and building materials;
- ask the council or energy company to check trees that may pose a threat to your property or powerlines; and
- check you have adequate home building and contents insurance and update as necessary.
